Irish Soda Bread

3 cupssifted flour
1/4 cupsugar
1/2 t.baking powder
3/4 t.salt
1 t.baking soda
1/4 t.cream of tartar
1/3 c.shortening (1/2 butter; 1/2 shortening)
1/3 c.currants
1 1/3 c.buttermilk
Sift together dry ingredients; cut in shortening. Add buttermilk and stir only until dry ingredients are moistened. Mix currants in lightly. Shape into ball and knead 15 seconds in bowl. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet. Flatten to 7" circle, 1 1/2" thick. Cut a cross across about 1/4" deep and 5" long. Bake at 350 degrees until done (45 to 50 minutes). Cool.
