Italian Spaghetti - Meat Sauce

1chopped onion
3 T.cooking oil
3/4 lb.ground beef
1/4 lb.ground pork
1 - No. 2 cantomatoes (Contadina)
2 - 6 oz. Canstomato paste
2 cupswater
1 t.salt
1/2 t.Pepper
1bay leaf
1 T.sugar
Cook onion in hot oil, add meat & cook until white. Add tomatoes and tomato paste, water, sugar, salt, pepper and bay leaf. Cook slowly for 1 hour. Note: I never use the ground pork and usually use 1 1/2 lbs. ground chuck because we like the sauce meaty. Also, I saute fresh garlic with the onion and add additional spices: oregano, basil and italian seasoning - to taste.
